Das sind rund 6.500 Inseln in der Ostsee, davon 65 bewohnt,
mit einer Gesamtfläche von 6.784 km², mit ungefähr 26.200
Einwohnern. Aland liegt zwischen Schweden und Finnland und
ist von dort aus problemlos und schnell mit der Fähre zu
erreichen. Die kürzeste Fährverbindung von Schweden dauert
gerade mal zwei Stunden.
Aland gehört als autonome Provinz zu Finnland, ist
vollkommen schwedischsprachig und besitzt neben einer
eigenen Flagge, eine eigene Regierung, eigene Briefmarken
und eigene Autokennzeichen. Die sechs größten Inseln sind
durch befestigte Straßen und Brücken miteinander verbunden,
zwischen den anderen Inseln verkehren Fähren.
Offizielles Zahlungsmittel ist der Euro, die schwedische
Krone wird aber vielerorts akzeptiert.
